The Roots

While the geometric patterns of Zakhrafa are often associated with Islamic art, the technique as we know it today was perfected by a visionary Christian artisan named George Bitar in the 1860s.

Working in the historic Bab Tuma (Thomas Gate) quarter of Old Damascus, Bitar introduced the intricate inlay of genuine Mother of Pearl that defines our collection today. His mastery was so renowned that he was commissioned to create pieces for royalty across Europe and the Ottoman Empire.

Today, this legacy continues in the winding alleys of Damascus, where Christian and Muslim master craftsmen work side-by-side. Every Walnut & Pearl piece is a symbol of this coexistence—a harmony of different woods and precious pearl, unified in one pattern.
